  1. I am not sure in which direction you are working on as it is not stated in your blog but from what I have observed you seem to look more into the old movie posters in the 70s or earlier. You mentioned in the previous class that you are not happy with the fact that commercial movie posters now are plainly just a screen shot from a movie scene and simply arranged with a slab of text. I thought it would be an interesting project to recreate movie posters for some of the movie posters that you are not pleased with and it could come in a series or just one depending on what you want. And how can a movie poster truly “communicate the essence of a film” and “connect with people” because ultimately I have to agree very much that the function of a poster is to promote. It might be a good start to start with the Singaporean posters such as the ones by Jack Neo which are probably couldn’t get any worse.

But there’s something to note, a lot of times the fame of the celebrities are the main attraction to the movie. And I have to totally agree that movie posters have been changing to suit the nature of their target audience, and I think they have been. Many times they are of course restricted by the people who paid for the posters (who usually picks the uglier works) and a lot of times artistic posters tend to be too abstract for the mass to relate to the film and of course for the convenience. These are probably reasons why the movie posters today have morphed into this state.

I’m not sure if it’s the same for you but I find posters that combine illustrations with photographic images interesting. You introduced some in your entries. It is perhaps more of a common trend in the past as it was more popular to use illustrations then.

Probably think about how different your poster can be (if you are designing a poster) and what should it communicate to us since the class should be the target audience.

I also like what you have said about polish posters. You could probably explore on the debate between Art and Commercial design, their values, and purposes. Can and should something of commercial purpose pertain artistic value?
